The Art of Golf is learning to do nothing

Golf with Mehlhorn
SAFETY FIRST
Be careful where you swing the grass whip give yourself plenty of open space. Lets learn, enjoy and be safe.

THE GRIP

Hold the grass whip with your golf grip. Hold it as loosely as possible. Like holding a ripe banana. Now copy that grip pressure or lack there of, when you play your round of golf.

SOME FUNDAMENTALS TO FOLLOW
When using the grass whip teach yourself to be as natural and efficient as possible. Don't worry, we will show you how you can do that. After all we have used our arms and legs in timing all our life. When we walk they swing in timing and when we run they pump in timing. Cutting grass is almost the same and it is natural to everyone. PLEASE DON'T CUT GRASS WITH YOUR GOLF SWING. The central idea here is to use your grass whip swing to hit the golf ball. If you will stick to that premise you will have the surprise of your life.

CUT THE GRASS
When using a grass whip you cut the grass in both directions of the swing. That's common sense, so we use the same speed in both directions. If the grass is light it's easy so we can swing easy. If the grass is thick and long we will work up a sweat in no time. The moral here is to pick out the light grass so we can move with comfort and ease. If you have never cut grass this way before it may take you a few minutes to catch the rhythm. If you don't pick up the timing and ease right away, don't panic. Wild Bill will come to your rescue. Just follow the pictorials graph check series of pictures. Do them with Bills guidance. These are wonderful exercises for golf and cutting grass. Our arms and legs move exactly the same doing all our arm leg activities. When we swing an ax, bat a baseball, hit a tennis ball, throw a ball, skip a stone across a pond, etc. we move the same way so we can teach ourselves the correct movement by associating with these movements. We just copy what it feels like. Cutting grass with a grass whip is one of those activities and it will come easy.

TAKE THE GRASS WHIP MOVEMENT TO THE GOLF COURSE
You're on the golf course now, you have a shot to play. The first thing you do is get a mental picture of the flight of the ball you want to play. Now take a couple of grass whip swings with your golf club clipping the grass to & fro WITH YOUR GRASS WHIP SWING NOT YOUR GOLF SWING. That means you are going to have the same speed swinging in both directions. On your last grass whip swing go into a rather full comfortable finish with your left eye high. Like those pictures you have seen of golf's great champions. Now, waste no time, step up to the ball and produce that flight that you pictured. Can you miss the shot, you bet you can because you have the mental element in there also. But here is what you have going for you with the grass whip/golf swing. The timing between arms and legs will be perfect, the direct line or path (plane) of the club will be perfect, as well as the release, the balance, the comfort and ease of movement. Every one agrees that confidence is the big factor in the mental side of the game. You will start acquiring that with the first golf shot you play. Yes, yes it is that easy. You are now on a golf adventure that will last an entire lifetime. You will attain the best results when you keep your conscious thought away from your movement. Put your attention (consciousness) on the flight of the ball, TOTALLY. That part doesn't happen over night but call me up when you start hitting shots where the ball is in the air exactly like you pictured and you have no memory of even swing at it. It's freaky, but the results are wonderful.

Best of luck,
Bobby Shave

Mehlhorn Grass Whip
"When I was a boy Mehlhorn was one of my favorite players to watch at the old North South Open at Pinehurst N.C. in the late 20's. He could indeed hit his ball on a quarter and give a dimes change."
Bill Woodward

************************

"I used to hit practice shots while holding the club with just the thumb and first finger of each hand. I did that a lot. That will teach you to swing the club not just move it."
